Margaret McElderry has died at 98. It's hard to say goodbye to one of the greats in children's book publishing. She's the first children's editor to named for an imprint, a tradition that we continue to see today. She's also published one of my all time favorite series...Susan Cooper's
The Dark is Rising. She was one fine lady, and although she stepped out of publishing at 86, she continued to be a strong presence in children's books until the day of her death. She will be missed.
"When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back,
Three from the circle, three from the track;
Wood, bronze, iron; water, fire, stone;
Five will return, and one go alone."
I still get shivers when I read these words.
